The cryosphere consists of those parts of the Earth's surface where water is found in solid form, including areas of snow, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, ice sheets, and icebergs. In these regions, surface temperatures remain below freezing for a portion of each year. Since ice and snow exist relatively close to their melting point, they frequently change from solid to liquid . The Cryosphere is a peer-reviewed scientific journal focusing on all aspects of frozen water and ground (especially glaciers) on Earth and on other planetary was established in and is published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences editors-in-chief are Florent Dominé (Université Laval and CNRS), Olaf Eisen (Alfred Wegener Discipline: Geoscience, glaciology.

The headline is actually a sentence that comes toward the end of Vanishing Ice, a new book that answers the question in encyclopedic detail. For those unfamiliar with the term, the cryosphere is the earth’s natural ice in all its forms. Executive Summary. The cryosphere, comprising snow, river and lake ice, sea ice, glaciers, ice shelves and ice sheets, and frozen ground, plays a major role in the Earth's climate system through its impact on the surface energy budget, the water cycle, primary productivity, surface gas exchange and sea level.

The cryosphere encompasses the Earth's snow and ice masses. It is a critical part of our planet's climate system, one that is especially at risk from climate change and global warming. The Cryosphere provides an essential introduction to the subject, written by one of the world's leading experts in Earth-system : Princeton University Press. The cryosphere 1 is the part of the Earth system that includes solid precipitation, snow, sea ice, lake and river ice, icebergs, glaciers and ice caps, ice sheets and ice shelves, and permafrost and seasonally frozen ground cryosphere is global, existing not just in the Arctic, Antarctic and mountain regions, but at all latitudes and in approximately one hundred countries.

Series Title: Princeton primers in climate. Responsibility: Shawn J. The cryosphere is the frozen water part of the Earth system. Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska. One part of the cryosphere is ice that is found in water.

This includes frozen parts of the ocean, such as waters surrounding Antarctica and the Arctic. There are places on Earth that are so cold that water is frozen solid. These areas of snow or ice. Cryosphere is a specific area of study under the umbrella of earth science.

It is concerned with those sections of earth where water is available in solid form. This book focuses on some of the diverse geographic regions that fall under cryosphere like permafrosts, ice cover in sea and oceans, river and lake ice, etc.
